The following rules and guidelines for the Network of International Business Schools (NIBS) International Case Competition, hereafter referred to as the Competition, have been designed to ensure fairness to all participating teams. The competition rules will be strictly enforced by the organizers and judges of the Competition. Interpretation of the competition rules that may arise during the Competition will be reviewed and decided by the organizers; their decisions will be final.

1. General Rules and Guidelines

1.1 Student Eligibility

The Competition is open to any student registered in an undergraduate (bachelor level or equivalent) - business (commerce, administration, management, etc.) program at any member institution of the Network of International Business Schools.

1.2. Team Composition

Each member institution may be represented by one team in the Qualifying Round. This team is composed of four eligible students.

1.3. Advisor

An advisor from each member institution will be determined to serve as liaison with the host institution.

1.4. Registration Fee

Each member institution wishing to enter a team for the Qualifying Round is required to pay a registration fee of USD 100 by Friday November 24, 2000.

1.5. Qualifying for the Championships

The top seven teams of the Qualifying Round will be invited to compete in the Championship Round along with a team from the host institution which receives a bye into the Championship Round. If, however, the winning team of the previous year’s competition chooses not to host the next competition, they still receive a bye into the following year’s Championship Round thus leaving six teams from the Qualifying Round to be invited.

Team Changes

Any changes in team composition between the end of the Qualifying Round and before the beginning Championship Round must have prior approval of the organizers.

1.7. Hosting the Championships

The member institution of the first place team of the Competition will be invited to host the following year's Championship Round. If this institution declines the invitation, the institution of the second place team of the Competition will be invited to host the following Championship Round. If the second place team declines as well, the highest finisher of the semi-final round losing teams will be invited, and so on. The organizers of this year’s Competition will have the responsibility of finding the next host institution. Finally, one institution cannot host the Championships more than two consecutive years.

1.8. Case Analyses

All case analyses of the competition become property of the host institution of the Championship Round and can be distributed as it sees fit. For example, copies of the case analyses may be returned to the authors of the cases in order to assist them in preparing the accompanying teaching notes.

1.9. Language

All case analysis reports and presentations must be in English.

- paper, pencils, and pens
- two computers with word processing, spreadsheet and graphics package
- blank formatted disks
- a printer

Each member of the team may bring into the preparation room one reference book and a calculator. Team members should coordinate so that they do not duplicate reference books. In addition, each team can also bring into the preparation room one dictionary, one English-language grammar text, rulers, and other drawing aids.

2.3. Time Limit

Each team has a maximum of six hours to prepare the case analysis report. The advisor will ensure that the time limit is enforced. No one is to see the case before the six-hour preparation period starts and no one can discuss the case with the team until the preparation period is over and the case analysis has been collected.

2.4 Case Analysis Report

The case analysis must be typed using double-spacing; no hand written material of any sort will be accepted. The case analysis must be prepared on either A4 or 8.5 x 11 white paper. A margin of at least 2.54 cm (1 inch) must surround the text. Page numbers and a table of contents are not necessary. The case analysis must be no longer than 1500 words, and may include any number of appendices, if and only if they are referenced in the text of the case. No additional text may be included in the appendices. The case analysis must have attached a title page, which includes the name of the institution and the names of the team members. The name of the institution and names of the team members cannot appear anywhere else in the case analysis.

2.5. Judging

Each case analysis report will be assigned an identification number after its title page is removed. All case analyses will be evaluated independently by three judges. The judges' scores will be added and the teams then ranked. The top seven teams will be invited to compete in the Championship Round.
